On November 23, the doors to Nevermore Academy opened with the release of Wednesday, the new Tim Burton-directed series on Netflix. The live-action show chronicles the magical and mischievous ways of Wednesday Addams, as she hones her psychic abilities at the extraordinary academic institution for outcasts. Jenna Ortega stars as the titular character, the only daughter of Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia Addams (Catherina Zeta-Jones) and sister to Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez).
Wednesday takes place against a backdrop of gothic castles, haunting forests, and ornate ballrooms. The series was filmed in a number of locations throughout Romania, including mountain towns and the nation’s capital, Bucharest. (Psst, you can visit Nevermore Academy IRL!) Here, we explore each of the strikingly beautiful filming locations of Netflix’s Wednesday.
Cantacuzino Castle
Our first stop on the Wednesday filming location tour? It’s Nevermore Academy, of course. For exterior shots of the school, the series used Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni, Romania. The neo-Romanian fortress was built in 1911 for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, the twice-elected mayor of Bucharest and Prime Minister of Romania in the late 1800s and early 1900s. According to House Beautiful, Netflix used special effects to alter the design of the castle’s roof. The castle and its grounds, which includes a park, grotto, fountains, courtyard, and church, is open to visitors and tours.
Casa Monteoru
The interior shots of Nevermore Academy were shot in Casa Monteoru, according to Netflix Romania. The historic house is located in the Romanian capital, Bucharest. Its grand marble staircase and ornamented rooms are featured as Wednesday and her peers navigate Nevermore’s halls and visit Principal Weems’ office.
Politehnica University of Bucharest
The school Wednesday is expelled from in episode 1 of the series was shot in the Politehnica University of Bucharest, a research institution founded in the nation’s capital in 1818. The pool in which Wednesday unleashes two bags of piranhas onto the water polo team is the Bazinul de Înot Dinamo, a swimming pool located in a sports park in Bucharest, Netflix Romania reports.
Bucharest Botanical Garden
The greenhouse at Nevermore Academy takes place in the Gradina Botanica Dimitrie Brândza, or the Bucharest Botanical Garden, per Netflix Romania. It was established in 1860 and is named after its founder, Dimitrie Brândza. The garden is located in the Cotroceni neighborhood of Romania’s capital and houses a number of different plants and botanical species.
Conacul Olga Greceanu
Conacul Olga Greceanu makes an appearance in episode 6 of the series, when Wednesday discovers the home where Garrett Gates once lived, according to Netflix Romania. The stately home and Romanian historical landmark can be found in Dâmbovița, a county just north of Bucharest.
Gara Regala
Netflix used Gara Regala, a train station in Sinaia, Romania for the station near Nevermore Academy. Sinaia is a picturesque town situated in the country’s Bucegi Mountains and was once home to a Romanian royal family.
